Disciplines of a Godly Man
R. Kent Hughes
Week 3 of 6
Friendship
Observation
Read 1 Samuel 18:1-4 and Ecclesiastes 4:9-12. Jonathan, the king's own son, ties his life to David and hands over his robe, his sword, and his bow. Solomon writes that two are better than one, because if one falls the other lifts him up, and a cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Both passages assume a man was never meant to stand alone.
Interpretation
Hughes points to a kind of friendship most men no longer have. Not a network, and not the men you work beside. A friend who has seen you at your worst and stayed. Scripture treats this as standard equipment for a man's life, not a luxury. Proverbs 27:6 says the wounds of a friend are faithful, which means a real friend tells you the truth even when it costs him. Proverbs 27:17 says iron sharpens iron. Neither one happens at a distance, and neither one happens with a man you are only trying to impress.
Application
Name one man you have drifted from and call him this week. Not a text. A call. Ask how he actually is, and stay on the line long enough to hear the real answer.
Prayer
Pray this over the week
Father, you did not make me to carry my life alone. Give me the courage to be known and the honesty to know another man well. Send me a friend I can sharpen and be sharpened by, and keep me from trading real friendship for the comfort of being admired. Amen.
